WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A coroner isn’t yet releasing the identity of the person found dead after a fire that gutted several apartments in a building where many Purdue University students live.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Donna Avolt says she expected the victim from Thursday’s pre-dawn fire will be positively identified during an autopsy Saturday.

West Lafayette Fire Chief Tim Heath tells the Journal & Courier (https://on.jconline.com/1gTDBu3 ) the person was found dead in the three-story building a few blocks from the southeastern edge of Purdue’s campus.

Officials say some other residents were taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation. The fire’s cause wasn’t immediately determined.

Purdue spokeswoman Liz Evans says the school is offering help to students displaced less than two weeks before the start of spring semester final exams.
