BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in North Dakota say they’re adding another administrative unit after membership in the western part of the state doubled over the past three years.

Mormon leaders say they will create a new stake for the western portion of the state. A stake is similar to a diocese in the Catholic church.

Bismarck Stake President Timothy Cox says the church had less than 3,000 members in 2011 in western North Dakota and now has more than 6,500.

The church is holding a region-wide conference in early May in Minot to discuss the issue.
