NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Bill de Blasio has cited an accident involving a carriage horse near Central Park as a “very simple reason” for why horses don’t belong on New York City’s streets.

However, a carriage-industry group disputed the mayor’s claim Thursday that the horse named Spartacus was spooked by a bus near the Plaza Hotel.

According to the New York Post (https://bit.ly/1nMdSbC ), the Historic Horse-Drawn carriages of Central Park said another carriage horse “unexpectedly pulled out” and knocked over Spartacus’ carriage, knocking him to the ground Wednesday.

De Blasio has pledged to rid the city’s horse-drawn carriage industry. He calls horses working on the city’s streets inhumane.

Actor Liam Neeson is among those campaigning to keep the colorful coaches. He says operators treat their horses well and the industry provides 400 jobs.
