HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says the Democratic Governors’ Association is acting appropriately by filing a federal lawsuit, challenging Connecticut’s campaign finance law that places restrictions on independent expenditures made in political campaigns.
The Democrat said Friday the DGA “wants to make sure that they are not in a position to violate the law.”
In its lawsuit, filed earlier this week against the State Elections Enforcement Commission, DGA said it intends to “make independent expenditures that expressly advocate the election and defeat of candidates for Connecticut governor.”
But the organization said the state’s campaign finance law’s definition of the term “expenditure” is “unconstitutionally overbroad and vague.”
Proponents of Connecticut’s law have urged Malloy to ask the association to drop its complaint. Malloy has previously served as the finance chairman for DGA.
