BANGOR, Maine (AP) - Republican Gov. Paul LePage has vetoed a bill to fix a $32 million gap in the state budget next fiscal year.
The bill vetoed Friday would also add $5 million to move hundreds of developmentally disabled residents off waiting lists for such Medicaid services as home-based care.
In his veto message, LePage says he can’t support a budget “that uses gimmicks to keep it balanced.” He opposes extending the cycle of Medicaid payments to providers, which would save $20 million.
LePage says the bill fails to provide adequate funding to eliminate the waiting lists and help struggling nursing homes.
The bill provides funding for the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2015.
Lawmakers will need two-thirds majority support in both chambers to override the veto when they return Wednesday.
