PHOENIX (AP) - Attorneys who won a racial profiling ruling against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s office say the case’s judge would be justified in keeping his requirement that all sheriff’s employees and volunteers read a summary of the case’s key findings.
Last week, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow ordered sheriff’s deputies, civilian employees and volunteers such as posse members to read the summary after he concluded Arpaio had mischaracterized a ruling in which the agency was found to have racially profiled Latinos in its immigration and traffic patrols.
Arpaio’s attorneys have since asked Snow to exempt some sheriff’s employees and volunteers from the requirement.
They say it’s unnecessary to have people working in the county’s jail system and some posse volunteers read the summaries because they aren’t involved in street enforcement.
