LOS ANGELES (AP) - The firm that maintains a South Los Angeles oil field where residents claim fumes have caused headaches, nosebleeds and other illnesses has agreed to spend about $700,000 to upgrade the facility.
The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/PArDOy ) the settlement announced Thursday ends a four-month investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency into Allenco Energy.
The company says it will fully enclose a 30-foot-long open trench to prevent noxious mixtures of mostly oil and water from being exposed to the atmosphere.
It also agreed to certify that all flame and combustible gas detectors, fire suppression systems and other equipment have been recently inspected and are up to code.
The EPA probe was prompted by hundreds of complaints in the University Park community.
The oil field’s operations have been suspended since November.
