BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A county clerk in western New York is hitting up local businesses for a donation again, but it’s aimed at saving taxpayers thousands of dollars.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs tells WIVB-TV in Buffalo (https://bit.ly/1lMRMsJ ) that the county Auto Bureau had to buy 10,000 pens a year because customers have a tendency to walk out the door with them. So last year he asked local business owners to donate pens to the agency, which operates several offices that handle transactions for the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

His request prompted Buffalo-area businesses to donate 13,000 pens with the businesses’ names and logos on them.

Jacobs says the initial batch is running low, so he’s appealing for a new crop of donated pens.
