TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - One big load will be on some western Indiana roads next week as crews move an electrical transformer weighing 88 tons.
The Duke Energy transformer was moved Thursday from a train car onto a trailer in Terre Haute. Crews plan to move it Monday along U.S. 41 and Vigo and Parke County roads on its way to Rockville.
Duke Energy district manager Rick Burger tells the Tribune-Star (https://bit.ly/1fdIK5c ) that police officers will escort the convoy during the daylong move.
A special 157-foot-long trailer with 96 tires will haul the transformer, which is 15 feet tall and 20 feet long.
Burger says the new transformer will carry some of the electrical load now carried by a current substation’s equipment and give Duke the flexibility to re-route power.
