FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Supreme Court has ruled against the former head of a Flint-area water agency who claimed he lost his job because of illegal retaliation.
The court says the Beecher Metropolitan District did nothing wrong in declining to rehire Richard Wurtz at the end of his 10-year contract in 2010. In a decision released Friday, the justices say whistle-blower protections under Michigan law only apply to existing employees.
The court says a Genesee County judge made the right call in dismissing Wurtz’ lawsuit.
Wurtz talked to the sheriff’s department and reporters about the cost of a trip to a water industry convention in 2009. The San Diego trip was taken by Beecher board members.
Charges were filed but board members were cleared.
