LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) - The former mayor of Lawrence, a polarizing figure whose administration was rife with allegations of corruption, says he plans to seek elected office again.
William Lantigua told a Spanish language radio station this week and confirmed to The Eagle-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1iUIjfs ) on Thursday that he will run as independent for the 16th Essex House District seat held by Democrat Marcos Devers.
Lantigua represented the district as a Democrat from 2002 to 2010 when he was elected the state’s first Latino mayor. He at first said he would retain both positions, but gave up the House seat under pressure.
He lost last year’s mayoral election to Daniel Rivera.
Lantigua says his supporters asked him to run and he thinks he has much to offer the district, which is entirely within Lawrence.
