PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence police are urging college students to immediately report sexual assaults, in response to an alleged rape case at Brown University.
Police say they received a report this month that a 22-year-old woman who attends Brown was raped by another student in August. Police Maj. David Lapatin told The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1gWGTwL ) there’s a very short time span to collect evidence in rape cases, and evidence in the Brown case may have been lost because of time.
The alleged victim protested the university’s handling of the incident during a rally with supporters Tuesday. She said she reported the incident to Brown officials shortly afterward and the alleged attacker was suspended until next fall, despite a recommended two-year suspension.
Brown officials say they can’t comment because of confidentiality laws.
