CHICAGO (AP) - The wife of a Chicago doctor killed in Afghanistan says her husband loved the Afghan people and the family holds no ill will toward the country or the gunman.

Jan Schuitema (SKEYE’-tuh-muh), the wife of Dr. Jerry Umanos, tells The Associated Press that she and her husband always knew the dangers of his volunteer work in Kabul, but they weren’t afraid because of their Christian faith.

They were married 34 years and both traveled to Afghanistan periodically from their home in Chicago to volunteer.

Umanos was among three Americans slain when an Afghan security guard opened fire at Cure International Hospital in Kabul.

Umanos had worked for more than 25 years at Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago and traveled to Afghanistan periodically to train young doctors and treat children.
