TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A woman is facing charges of arson and felony criminal damage following a fire at a Tucson church.

Police say 35-year-old Glenda Jean Gomez was arrested this week on suspicion of starting a fire at Holy Family Catholic Church on April 17.

Two detectives were on duty when they spotted the fire. They called the fire department and then rushed into the building. They found a priest and two volunteers who were unaware of the flames.

The building was evacuated, and firefighters doused the flames.

Investigators determined that clothes and books were intentionally set on fire in a stairwell near the front of the church. Detectives obtained information that led them to Gomez.

Gomez was booked into the Pima County Jail. It’s not immediately clear if she has an attorney.
