NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has unveiled the first of four solar installations at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Officials toured the 152-panel installation located on top of an AirTrain electrical substation on Thursday. A second installation is finished and two more are underway. They’re located on two maintenance buildings and a cargo building at the airport.
The Port Authority estimates they’ll supply the airport with about 817,000 kilowatt-hours per year, or the equivalent of powering 62 homes with electricity or removing 90 vehicles from the road. They’re projected to save about $60,000 annually.
Newark is the first of the Port Authority’s airports to receive solar installations.
The Port Authority is buying the electricity produced by the solar panels through an agreement with New York-based ConEdison Solutions.
