MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - Former National Public Radio correspondent Larry Abramson has been appointed the dean of the School of Journalism at the University of Montana.

Abramson’s selection was announced late Wednesday.

The Missoulian reports (https://tinyurl.com/me9dn6b ) Abramson will be the first dean of the journalism school who doesn’t have a background in newspapers.

Denise Dowling, the current dean, said Abramson’s broadcast background reflects changes in journalism.

Abramson was a national correspondent who covered education and national security for NPR.

He also served as deputy science editor on the network’s national desk.

He is scheduled to succeed Dowling on July 1.
