BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Two people have been charged with election crimes in an effort to gather signatures to recall the Benton Harbor mayor.

The Berrien County prosecutor’s office says Edward Pinkney of Benton Township is charged with changing dates on petitions used to gather signatures. He’s also accused of allowing someone to sign more than one time.

James Cornelius of Benton Harbor is charged with allowing someone to sign more than once and permitting people to sign outside his presence.

A message seeking comment was left for Pinkney. There was no home phone number listed for Cornelius.

Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower faces a recall election on May 6.
