GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - An American doctor killed in Afghanistan went to medical school in Detroit and has a son who is a Grand Rapids police officer.
Dr. Jerry Umanos of Chicago was among three Americans killed when an Afghan security guard opened fire at Cure International Hospital in Kabul.
His son, Ben Umanos, became a Grand Rapids police officer in December after working at the Manistee County sheriff’s office in northern Michigan.
Jerry Umanos graduated in 1982 from Wayne State University medical school in Detroit. The dean, Dr. Valerie Parisi, didn’t know Umanos but says he “shared the spirit of helping those who need it most.”
Umanos was volunteering in Afghanistan to train young doctors and treat children. He periodically returned to Chicago to work at Lawndale Christian Health Center.
