SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Leaders of Pride Prep in Spokane signed the charter Tuesday for the first charter school in Washington.
CEO Brenda McDonald tells KREM (https://bit.ly/1tBIiBC) plans are progressing to open the school in the fall of 2015.
Pride Prep plans to have about 125 students in the sixth and seventh grades in its first year. They’ll take twice as many science classes as traditional schools to interest students in careers in science or technology.
State voters in 2012 approved a charter-school measure that allows up to 40 independent public schools to open within five years. Eight won approval this year - seven in Western Washington and the one in Spokane, which was the first to be approved by a school district.
