PAHRUMP, Nev. (AP) - A sheriff’s candidate in rural Nye County is facing criminal charges after he was accused of stealing rival campaign signs, authorities said Wednesday.
Nye County sheriff’s deputies arrested Assistant Nye County Sheriff Rick Marshall at about 7 p.m. Tuesday in Pahrump after a complaint from an official with a rival “Anybody but Rick Marshall” campaign, according to an arrest report.
Marshall didn’t immediately respond Wednesday to messages seeking comment.
Marshall was arrested on possession of stolen property, conspiracy and resisting arrest charges after deputies said he held tightly to a metal bar on a truck in an attempt to prevent being handcuffed.
Deputies stopped Marshall while he was driving with a sheriff’s office volunteer, Ben Gulley, in a pickup truck. The truck was towing a trailer containing Marshall campaign signs and at least one sign from the rival group, the arrest report said.
Gulley was arrested on charges of conspiracy and possession of stolen property. Marshall and Gulley were released without bail pending a court appearance.
Marshall told deputies he found the sign in the road and picked it up. Gulley told deputies he pulled campaign signs at Marshall’s direction, the report said.
The investigation began with a complaint to deputies Sunday that more than 40 campaign signs had been stolen in the Pahrump area.
Marshall is one of 10 candidates running to replace Sheriff Tony DeMeo, who is retiring after three terms.
KLAS-TV in Las Vegas reported that DeMeo was vacationing out of the country and unavailable for comment.
Pahrump, with almost 38,000 residents, is about 60 miles west of Las Vegas.
