CORONA, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California custom auto shop once featured on MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” will pay its employees nearly $160,000 to settle claims that it violated federal wage laws.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced Wednesday that it reached a settlement with West Coast Customs of Corona. Forty-five employees will receive back wages.
Regulators say an investigation concluded that the company paid a weekly salary to workers regardless of the hours they actually worked, with some earning just $6 an hour.
Authorities also claimed the business misclassified some workers as independent contractors and failed to keep complete payroll records.
West Coast Customs appeared in early seasons of the MTV series “Pimp My Ride” and currently has a series on Fox Sports 2.
