HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut lawmakers are attempting to address fights and other acts of violence that have occurred at some juice bars, establishments serving alcohol that allow underage patrons.
Rep. Matthew Ritter said current law requires bars to notify local police when they have juice bar events. They also must hire an undercover police officer. But Ritter said there have been problems in Hartford and New Haven where hundreds of patrons show up and the police have not been notified.
The House of Representatives on Wednesday unanimously passed legislation prohibiting juice bars from serving alcohol to a patron without a wristband indicating they are 21 years or older. It stiffens penalties, creates a 25-day-window for notifying police of events, and allows more than one undercover officer to attend.
The bill awaits Senate action.
