COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Organizers of the South Carolina Historic Preservation Conference say the event will focus on the value of history.

The conference is being held Tuesday in Columbia. Its theme is preserving, protecting and promoting historic assets.

The topics range from the importance of oral history in recovering the past to strategies for determining the age of historic buildings and researching the state’s vanishing rural markets.

Other sessions at the daylong conference deal with restoring historic gardens, obtaining historic tax credits and preserving buildings that can date back to the middle of the last century.
