ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says he wants local authorities to know when rail companies are transporting potentially hazardous materials through their communities.
The Democrat is proposing a federal requirement that rail companies notify local first responders when they plan to transport cargo such as crude oil or ethanol.
Schumer says officials in Rockland and Orange counties have unsuccessfully asked to be notified when hazardous material is being carried through their counties. He is scheduled to discuss his proposal Tuesday during visits to both counties.
