NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Public Library will display some rare historical items from its collection in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
They include a 1939 Warsaw telephone directory published shortly before World War II. The Polish capital had the largest Jewish population in Europe at the time.
Other items include a photograph of the destroyed Warsaw ghetto soon after the 1943 uprising.
The exhibition also features a 1946 booklet for U.S. servicemen stationed in Germany during the first Passover after peace began. It compares Adolph Hitler to Pharaoh, who enslaved the Jewish people. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the military leader who went on to become president, is compared to Moses.
The free multi-media exhibition runs Thursday through May 7 at the Fifth Avenue landmark building.
Holocaust Remembrance Day begins Monday at sundown.
