Louisville businessman Matt Bevin rolled out a new campaign ad on Tuesday in which some of his nine children go to bat for their father and accuse Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of telling lies about him in the run-up to the state’s GOP primary.

“Mitch McConell is telling a bunch of lies about my dad,” one of his kids say in the 30-second television spot. “Don’t be fooled.”

His kids say their father served in the army, loves God and leads by example.

“He plays with us, and he prays with us,” two of his daughters say.

Mr. Bevin is facing off against Mr. McConnell, a five-term incumbent, in the state’s May 20 primary. The winner will go up against Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes in the November election.

The McConnell camp responded to the ad on Tuesday.

“There’s no question that Matt Bevin has a beautiful family, but it’s unfortunate that he feels the need to bring them into the campaign to launch political attacks,” said Allison Moore, a spokeswoman for the McConnell campaign. “All the statements our campaign has made about Mr. Bevin are true. Matt just isn’t the candidate he’s portraying.”
