HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Hartford officials have named a Maryland educator as the capital city’s new superintendent of schools.
The city’s Board of Education finished a nationwide search Monday and chose Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, a deputy superintendent for public schools in Montgomery County, Md.
Schiavino-Narvaez is set to begin her new job July 1 and will succeed Christina Kishimoto, the first Latino to lead the city’s school system. The school board decided last year not to renew Kishimoto’s contract amid concerns that reforms were moving too slow, but Kishimoto defended her record.
Schiavino-Narvaez beat 58 other applicants for the Hartford job, including co-finalist Ronald Taylor, the school superintendent in Willingboro, N.J.
Shiavino-Narvaez is a former Fulbright scholar who was an assistant school superintendent in Springfield, Mass., before taking a job with Montgomery County in 2011.
