Sen. John McCain of Arizona said Tuesday that President Obama’s approach to foreign affairs shows he does not appreciate the importance of American leadership and said the Democrat boxed himself in by vowing on the campaign trail to reduce the nation’s military footprint across the globe.
Mr. McCain said that he parted ways with Mr. Obama over the way the administration handled the civil war in Syria and said that he feels the administration needs to show more leadership in easing tensions in Ukraine.
“I think that he does not appreciate, in my view, the importance of American leadership,” Mr. McCain said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “That we are an exceptional nation.”
Mr. McCain said the nation should stand up for people who are struggling for freedom.
