LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Louisville has signed 7-foot-1 forward/center Anas Osama Mahmoud to a national letter of intent to play for the Cardinals.

Mahmoud played last season for West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Fla., averaging 13.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.1 blocked shots per game. The Cairo, Egypt, native has also played for his country’s national teams: He was a reserve on last year’s senior national squad and averaged 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest with the under-17 team two years ago.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino called the 205-pound Mahmoud “an extremely versatile 7-footer” in a statement but added, “we will base a consideration on redshirting him on how quickly he can gain necessary strength to be effective.”

The Cardinals previously signed 7-1 forward/center Matz Stockman from Norway to its recruiting class.
