BALTIMORE (AP) - Domino Sugar is taking its iconic sign along Baltimore’s harbor solar.

Domino and its parent company ASR Group marked Earth Day on Tuesday by announcing that a new solar array installed at the refinery is expected to generate more energy than the sign uses. The 8,400-square-foot, red neon sign atop the refinery has lit up Baltimore’s night sky since 1951.

The array is part of a sustainability effort that also includes adding an electric car charging station for employees and switching out petroleum-based polyethylene hard hats for sugar cane-based ones. The old hats will be recycled or donated.

Domino employs more than 1,200 Maryland-based workers.
