PHOENIX (AP) - Efforts to turn around Arizona’s persistently low-performing schools will be getting a $10 million boost from the federal government.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the funding Tuesday. It comes from the department’s school improvement grants program. New Hampshire also will be receiving more than $1.3 million.

The two states will award the money through a competitive process to those school districts that demonstrate the greatest need and the strongest commitment to providing adequate resources for raising student achievement.

Duncan says when schools fail, children and neighborhoods suffer. He says turning around low-performing schools represents an opportunity to improve the lives of some children.

The program has invested in more than 1,500 of the country’s lowest-performing schools, and federal officials say early findings show progress at many of the schools.
