EDGEWOOD, Md. (AP) - The Army says it’s investigating the death of a grounds maintenance worker who was hurt while cutting grass at Aberdeen Proving Ground near Edgewood.

Post spokesman Kelly Luster says 61-year-old Willie Stevenson was injured while using a riding mower near the Route 24 gate at about 9 a.m. Tuesday.

He says the civilian employee of the post’s public works department was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he died.

The Route 24 gate provides access to the Edgewood Area for non-federal government visitors and truck drivers.

Luster says the Army’s investigation will determine if the death was an accident.

Meanwhile, the garrison commander, Col. Gregory McClinton, is ordering a review of safety and operating procedures.
