WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A South Florida teen has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his girlfriend’s fatal shooting.

A Palm Beach County judge sentenced 19-year-old Alex Brinkley on Monday. He was previously convicted of third-degree murder and gun-possession charges.

Witnesses say Brinkley had the gun out at 21-year-old Dominique Flood’s Riviera Beach home in October, even after other friends asked him to put it away. Brinkley was saying goodbye to Flood when the gun discharged, hitting the young woman.

Brinkley’s attorney asked that he be sentenced as a youthful offender. The Palm Beach Post (https://goo.gl/geCvuZ ) reports that the judge rejected the request, agreeing with prosecutors that Brinkley never should have had the gun in the first place.
