MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Fish and Wildlife officials are asking drivers to share the road with reptiles.
Officials say spring is breeding season for frogs, turtles, salamanders and other reptiles. The amphibians migrate by the thousands each spring in search of breeding pools and - in the case of turtles - sandy embankments.
Motorists are asked to slow down and be particularly vigilant near wetlands and ponds to help preserve several Vermont species that are in decline. Rainy spring nights bring the reptiles out in droves, they say.
Turtle activity is expected to peak from late May through early June. Drivers who want to help turtles across the road are advised to use a stick or shovel to push them in the direction they’re heading to avoid painful encounters with snapping turtles.
