PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is asking residents of coastal New England to be wary of seal pups on local beaches.
The administration recently announced that seal pupping season is underway. New England’s gray and harbor seals gave birth to pups in late winter and early spring. The administration said chances of human encounters with seal mothers and pups or lone pups is increased at this time of the year.
NOAA asks residents to always stay at least 150 feet from seals and keep pets away from them. Residents can report strandings to NOAA by calling 1-866-755-6622.
