MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Historical Museum is presenting the first exhibition of works by Wisconsin folk artist Paul Seifert.
In the late 1870s, Seifert began painting watercolors of Richland City area farms and scenes and continued into the early 1900s.
Folk art scholars discovered his work in 1950, nearly 30 years after his death, and now he’s recognized as a leading folk artist of rural scenes.
Seifert painted what he wanted to present so the farmyards, gardens, and orchards were likely not as ideal as he depicted.
Museum officials say Seifert’s paintings, while highly desired by collectors, have not been exhibited together previously.
“Wisconsin in Watercolor: The Farmscapes of Paul Seifert” includes 17 paintings that will be on display through Aug. 30 in Madison.
