Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has called Nevada cattle rancher Cliven Bundy’s supporters “terrorists” (“’Patriot Party’ gathers at Bundy’s Nevada ranch; Reid deems them ’domestic terrorists,’ ” Web, April 18).

But what is an American terrorist? Is it an advocate of a taxpaying rancher whose family’s cattle have grazed on the same land for 140 years, a man who provides beef to the country?

Or perhaps an “American terrorist” is a Washington bureaucrat who has forgotten the sacred duty of his position to honor and serve the Constitution and instead covers up the crimes of an attorney general who gave guns to Mexican drug cartels. Perhaps this individual is someone who gives cover to a secretary of state responsible for the negligent deaths of four Americans in Benghazi. Perhaps he is a Senate leader who ignores the actions of an Internal Revenue Service that criminally attacks and denies equal justice to honest Americans.

How much more corruption must America endure at the hands of a government that lies and abuses its power? We shouldn’t be too surprised. Alexis de Tocqueville explained our current situation when he wrote in “Democracy in America”: “Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
