TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida State’s Jameis Winston had a slower seven days after a busy previous week that included the spring football game. The Heisman winner played in just two of four games, but did throw a career-high 4.2 innings while earning his first win of the season during the weekend.

The Seminoles went 3-1 and held onto first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Atlantic division.

A look at how the 20-year-old sophomore fared last week:

___

IN RELIEF: Winston pitched in both of the games he played last week. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound two-sport star entered the ninth inning of a 6-1 win against Jacksonville on Tuesday and struck out the first two batters he faced. The next reached base on an error before Winston got Dylan Dillard to ground out to end the game. Winston entered Saturday’s 4-3 win against Wake Forest in the ninth inning and pitched the final 4.2 innings. He entered with one out and a runner on third and erased that runner when Grant Shambley laid down a bunt and catcher Danny De La Calle tagged the runner at home. Winston got out of the inning on a grounder back to the mound. He worked a 1-2-3 11th inning that included a double play and strikeout. Winston gave up a hit and a walk in the 12th inning, but two ground outs and a strikeout took care of the threat. He finished off the game and earned the win getting a pop out, a fly out and a ground out in the 13th inning. Winston’s pitching line for the week: 5.2 innings, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 1 BB, 20 batters faced, 1 win.

AT THE PLATE: Winston did not have an at bat last week.

IN THE FIELD: Winston put in work in the field while earning the win Saturday. He threw two runners out on grounders and was on the receiving end of an out on a grounder to the first baseman. Winston also started a 1-6-3 double play in the 11th inning.

HIGHLIGHT: Winston did a little bit of everything from the mound in Saturday’s win. He worked out of jams, was active in the field and did not surrender a single run in the series-clinching victory over an ACC division opponent.

ON THE SEASON: Winston has four hits in 30 at-bats and is batting .133; on the mound he has pitched 22.0 innings, struck out 21 of the 78 batters he’s faced, has given up 12 hits and four walks. He has five saves and one win with a 1.23 ERA.

ON DECK: Florida State hosts Stetson in a two-game midweek series starting Tuesday before a three-game weekend series against Virginia starting Friday.

QUOTABLE: “No, we don’t (want Winston throwing 4.2 innings),” Florida State coach Mike Martin said. “But he kept having the short number of pitches. He gave us a chance.”
