The George Washington and Virginia men’s basketball teams both played in Raleigh during the NCAA tournament. Looks like the Colonials and Cavaliers will be seeing a lot more of each other over the next two seasons.
GW and Virginia agreed to a home-and-home series for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, George Washington announced on Monday.
Coming off a 24-9 season, the Colonials will travel to Charlottesville to meet the defending ACC champion Cavaliers at John Paul Jones Arena on November 21.
Virginia then heads to Foggy Bottom for a matchup at the Smith Center on Nov. 16, 2015.
The two sides first met during the 1906-07 season with the last matchup during the first round of the postseason NIT in March 2004. Virginia leads the series 25-23.
The Cavaliers, who reached the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament, have been ranked in very early 2015 top-25 polls. The Colonials return four of their top six players from last season.
GW has not been shy about playing non-conference games against power-conference programs under coach Mike Lonergan. Last season GW faced Maryland, Creighton, Miami (Fla.), Marquette, Georgia and Rutgers.
“Our goal is to play a schedule that is challenging and puts us in a position for a berth to the NCAA tournament every season,” Lonergan said. “It’s going to be an exciting regional rivalry for our players, students, alumni and fans.”
