GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The city of Greenwood has hired a consultant to evaluate AT&T’s proposal to bring its U-Verse cable television service to town.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams said that U-Verse, which is not yet available in the Greenwood area, could be offered to residents later this year as a second option for cable service. McAdams said the era of the 20-year franchise agreements is over in Greenwood.
“That just ties us down,” she said.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/RvES5b ) the city’s current cable TV contract with Suddenlink expires in 2017.
Currently, the city receives a 5 percent franchise fee from Suddenlink for each customer in the city. McAdams said any U-Verse proposed franchise fee cannot be lower than Suddenlink’s fee.
The mayor said U-Verse is already available in Jackson, Madison, Brandon and Corinth.
Local Government Services LLC of Austin, Texas, was hired to look at AT&T’s proposed contract for the city and recommend any changes, if needed.
McAdams said a representative from AT&T, will appear before the council at its next meeting on May 6.
