A car smashed through the walls of a Fort Myers, Fla., church during Easter service, injuring 21 and sending several to the hospital in critical condition, police said.
All 21 were transported for treatment, but not all had serious injuries, CBS reported.
More than 200 were attending service at the Second Haitian Baptist Church when a Lexus smashed through the walls and rammed into pews and people. Some victims were trapped beneath the car, CBS said.
Police say the incident was an accident. The driver said her brakes failed while she was trying to navigate into a church parking space.
“Twenty or more parishioners were using jacks from their cars,” police said to the local WINK station. “They must have come out into the parking lot and grabbed these jacks and were attempting to jack and manually lift the vehicle off of several people who were trapped underneath.”
