KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - More than three frustrating months after their season ended in Indianapolis, the Kansas City Chiefs gathered for the start of offseason workouts on Monday and there was plenty of news for coach Andy Reid to deliver.
Second-year pro Eric Fisher, who will slide from right tackle to left tackle, had surgery on his left shoulder and to repair a sports hernia. The Chiefs’ first-round pick a year ago has been rehabbing in Kansas City this offseason and hopes to be ready soon.
“I’m feeling good. Obviously I had a couple surgeries. Just in here every day working,” Fisher said. “When they tell me I’m cleared, I’ll be out there doing my thing.”
Reid also said that safety Sanders Commings had surgery for an undisclosed injury and has been cleared to work out. Travis Kelce, who had a season-ending knee injury last season, has also been progressing, and running back Knile Davis has recovered from a knee injury that he picked up in the playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
“The guys seemed to have great energy this morning, which was exciting,” Reid said. “You like to see guys that are excited to get back to work and doing what they love to do.”
The Chiefs, already bumping up against the salary cap, have been quiet during free agency, and Reid indicated that holdovers are in line to fill the team’s most glaring holes.
Left tackle Branden Albert and right guards Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz all left in free agency. Fisher’s move to the left side means that Donald Stephenson will slide into the starting lineup at right tackle, and Rishaw Johnson will get the first crack at right guard.
Kansas City also lost free safety Kendrick Lewis. Reid said Husain Abdullah is the front-runner for that job, though Commings could also factor into the mix.
“There’s some new faces in there, some players that moved on. We’re excited for the new players we’ve added,” Reid said, “and at the same time pulling for those guys that aren’t here.”
In other Chiefs news Monday:
- Reid declined to say how many players showed up for the first day of workouts, which are not mandatory. But the second-year Chiefs coach did say “we had a good turnout.”
- The Chiefs and Dwayne Bowe said they are unsure whether the wide receiver will be suspended by the league for his arrest last November. Bowe pleaded guilty last week to amended charges of defective equipment and littering in connection with his arrest for possessing marijuana.
“I pray I don’t (get disciplined),” Bowe said. “I don’t think I will.”
- Wide receiver Kyle Williams said on Twitter that he has re-signed with the Chiefs, who had not announced the deal. The Chiefs claimed him off waivers last season, only to lose him to a torn ACL a week later. He only appeared in one game and did not make a catch. “He’s a good player,” Reid said. “Quick, fast.”
As for the way last season ended, some players - including safety Eric Berry - said they had watched the Chiefs’ epic meltdown in Indianapolis several times. Others said they could not bear to watch the way the season ended, preferring instead to look ahead to next season.
And the road to next season truly began with Monday’s offseason workouts.
“This year, there’s so much on the table,” Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson said. “The sky’s the limit for this team. We just have to put the pieces together.”
