A 12-year-old Boy Scout was killed during a troop outing over the weekend when he was crushed by a felled tree while he and his friends tried to roll it into a lake at Olympic National Forest in Washington.
The boy’s jacket got hooked under the tree, said Deputy Joe Nole of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said, The Daily Mail reported. He was then pulled beneath the tree and sustained a massive head injury in the incident, authorities said.
It took search-and-rescue teams three hours to arrive on the scene — due in part to the remoteness of the camping site and in part to poor weather, which prevented a helicopter crew from flying in an emergency team, The Daily Mail said. But law enforcement said the boy was injured to the extent that a quicker emergency response time probably wouldn’t have mattered.
“He had massive head trauma,” said Deputy Nole, to the Peninsula Daily News.
The boy’s father was one of the adult chaperones on the camping trip.
