MCBEE, S.C. (AP) - Nearly 50 people face criminal charges after South Carolina deputies raided a cockfight that drew people from across the state and North Carolina.

WPDE reports (https://bit.ly/1hfGHbf ) Chesterfield County Sheriff Robert Lee as saying officers raided the battle between fighting chickens on Saturday in the small town of McBee.

Lee said additional charges are expected against a man considered to be the ringleader of the blood sport.

Lee says officers seized more than 100 chickens that were fighting to the death in two makeshift rings. Ten chickens were already dead when officers acting on a tip arrived.

The surviving chickens will be evaluated and could be made available for adoption.
