SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A central Texas man is facing attempted capital murder charges after allegedly shooting a police officer during a traffic stop, then leading authorities on a high-speed, multi-county chase.
Fredericksburg police officer Bradley Durst stopped a car around 1:40 a.m. Saturday. As the officer approached the vehicle, police say Robert Rendon, 31, fired multiple shots, hitting Durst twice.
Rendon, of San Angelo, then fled and eventually fired shots at other officers pursuing him, according to police. Around 4 a.m., he lost control of his car and crashed in San Antonio.
Investigators found an assault rifle and handgun in his car, according to a news release from San Antonio police.
A man who answered a phone number listed as belonging to a relative of Rendon, Josephine Rendon of San Angelo, said Sunday the family declined to comment. Information on whether Rendon had an attorney was unavailable.
The news release states that Rendon faces three counts of attempted capital murder. His bond was set at a combined $750,000 for shooting at San Antonio officers. The Bexar County Jail also listed a $1 million bond out of Gillespie County, where Durst was shot.
Rendon cannot be released on bond, though, because of a parole violation, according to jail officials. Further information about the nature of the parole violation was not immediately available Sunday.
Durst had surgery and was listed in stable condition Sunday, according to Fredericksburg police.
