ST. LOUIS (AP) - Presidential scholars and history buffs will gather in downtown St. Louis this weekend to commemorate the historical and political legacy of Ulysses S. Grant, the Civil War general and 18th U.S. president.
Grant married a married a Missouri native and lived on the White Haven family farm in what is now the St. Louis County town of Affton before he was elected president in 1868. In addition to a national historic site in his name, St. Louis is also home to Grant’s Farm, the ancestral property of the Busch family of beer-making fame.
Symposium events on Saturday include a lecture by University of California-Los Angeles professor Ronald White Jr., author of a new Grant biography. White will speak at the St. Louis Central Library.
