NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is announcing 4,268 new pre-kindergarten seats for the 2014-2015 school year.
The seats in public schools in all five boroughs are the first wave in the city’s effort to offer full-day pre-K to every 4-year-old.
De Blasio announced the new pre-K slots at a school in Queens that will offer full-day pre-K next fall.
New York legislators and Gov. Andrew Cuomo agreed to a state budget that includes $300 million for New York City pre-K programs.
The deadline to apply for the public school pre-K programs is April 23.
There will be a later deadline for slots in community-based organizations that will be offering pre-K programs.
The city’s goal is to provide 73,250 pre-K slots by fall 2015.
