ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo is heralding the start of trout and salmon season by announcing new investments in recreational fishing.
Cuomo says the state will set aside $4 million to repair fish hatcheries and purchase 16 trucks specially designed to transport stocked fish.
The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation runs 12 hatcheries in the state and expects to stock lakes, ponds and streams with more than 2.3 million trout this year.
The state is also reducing the cost of seven-day fishing licenses and expanding the number of free fishing days.
Trout and salmon fishing season began Tuesday.
