TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A Kansas House committee is poised to revise a plan for increasing aid to poor school districts but has postponed its discussion of the details.
The Appropriations Committee had planned to work on the plan Wednesday night, but Chairman and Wichita Republican Gene Suellentrop (SWOH’-luhn-trohp) abruptly adjourned the meeting. He said work would resume Thursday evening.
The delay means that the full House won’t be able to debate the plan until Friday.
The measure boosts aid to poor districts by $141 million to comply with a Kansas Supreme Court ruling last month.
The committee narrowly endorsed the proposal Tuesday. But Suellentrop said questions arose about a proposal in the plan to offset part of the cost by decreasing payments to school districts to cover teacher pensions.
