BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Burlington’s Department of Public Works says the harsh winter was costly and diverted resources from sidewalk construction.

The city’s Public Works Director Chapin Spencer says that his department doled out more than $300,000 on salt, which exceeds their annual $195,000 budget.

Public Works Assistant Director Rob Green also said in an email the city went over budget by $62,000 on overtime for employees.

Small sidewalk repairs also poured in during the winter and the Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/OdfFdg ) that it diverted resources from the department’s other sidewalk construction projects.

Spencer says that although the street and sidewalk fund will probably be over budget, the department as a whole will be on target for their budget estimates because they received higher than expected building permit revenue.
